The Council on State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan organized a scientific-practical conference titled “First democratic republic in the Muslim’s East” on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Chairman of the Council, MP Azay Guliyev stated that establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918 is one of the most brilliant pages of the history of our people's statehood: “Although in the 19th century, northern territories of Azerbaijan were occupied by Russia and joined the Empire in the form of khanates, it became free from the Russian Empire as united and independent state covering 114 thousand km² in 1918. Founders of the Republic united and established Azerbaijan Democratic Republic as a result of their potential, passion, care and devotion to their nation”.
Azay Guliyev stressed that establishing Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, proclamation of the Declaration of Independence required great intelligence, insight, courage, will and heroism. If the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was not created 100 years ago, we would certainly not have our own independent state now. In best case, Azerbaijan would be part of the Soviets as a province of Russia after the Bolshevik revolution: “We are grateful to the spirit of the founders of this republic for their historic achievement and we commemorate their dear memories”.
Chairman of the Council said that unfortunately, the Republic, which established national currency and army, declared equal rights for women and men, granted women the right to elect in contrast to the United States, existed only for 23 months and collapsed as a result of Russia’s occupation.
Azay Guliyev stated that national leader Heydar Aliyev realized the dream of ADR founders and made our independence everlasting. Mrş President İlham Aliyev strengthened independent Azerbaijan and it became poüer center of the region.
Director of the Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, academician, MP, Yagub Mahmudov broadly reported in the conference. Analyzing the complicated political situation in the early 20th century in the Caucasus, he said that hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis were brutally killed after the relocation of the new and alien nation-Armenians by Tsarist Russia to the region in the 19th century. Y.Mahmudov noted that Azerbaijani intellectuals achieved to establish independent state in spite of all difficulties.
Academician stated that by establishing the Republic, Azerbaijani nation proved that it is impossible to destroy the nation, who has statehood history for 5 thousand years: “We, Azerbaijani Turks established the first democratic republic in the Turkish World, Islam countries. Racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe have risen in the 21st century. However, Azerbaijan Democratic Republic announced same rights for all nations irrespective of race, religion, language, nationality. Women were granted the right to elect and to be elected. Censorship was abolished. Implementing them required great diligence and intelligence”.
Yagub Mahmudov underlined that most of the pages of the history of Azerbaijan were falsified during the Soviet era. Real history of our nation is deeply studied and spread all over the world: “national leader Heydar Aliyev had always paid special attention to the history of ADR, finding out and spreading the realities about our country. National leader greatly served the Azerbaijani nation in terms of delivering the history of Azerbaijani nation. The Institute of History has published a number of books covering the history of ADR on his instruction. This tradition is continued by President Ilham Aliyev. Hundreds of thousands pages of documents on the genocide of Azerbaijanis have been brought to Azerbaijan from different parts of the world and are at the disposal of specialists”.
Short documentary film prepared by the Council on the 100th anniversary of the ADR was presented in the conference.
MP Fazail Aghamali thanked the Council for high level organization of the conference and said that jointly organization of the conference with the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences will be very beneficial.
